Ayesha Abed Foundation was founded on the vision of empowering rural women by bringing work opportunities closer to home. Each sub-center of Ayesha Abed Foundation is thoughtfully located within walking distance of the artisans’ houses, ensuring that thousands of women artisans can earn a livelihood while remaining in a safe and familiar environment. In most cases, these sub-centers are exclusively led and run by women. Every sub-center tells different yet inspiring stories. One such story of resilience, inclusion, and transformation comes from the Dameshwar sub-center in Jamalpur.
Sagor (Pseudonym), a younger brother of Jainab (Pseudonym), used to accompany her to the sub-center during his childhood. He was quiet, curious, and always observing. Born with a speech disorder, Sagor cannot speak, but that never stopped him from learning. He silently picked up the intricate stitching techniques simply by observing. His hands moved with precision, mimicking the stitches he had seen so many times before.
Recognizing his potential, the center-in-charge brought this matter to the attention of the Ayesha Abed Foundation team, advocating for his inclusion. In a place with limited work opportunities available to Sagor due to his speech impairment, his chances at traditional employment were small. Ayesha Abed Foundation took a step forward, welcoming him Dameshwar sub-center as an artisan. He embraced the opportunity with unmatched dedication. His attention to detail, flawless craftsmanship soon made him stand out among his peers.
Working alongside 36 women in a space led by a woman, Sagor not only feels secure but also thrives. The support, respect, and acceptance he receives every day have changed the narrative of his personal and professional growth. The Dameshwar sub-center sets an example of what an inclusive workplace can achieve. It remains the workplace led by women, shaped by empathy, and open to all who are willing to learn and contribute regardless of gender and ability.
